The days are waning, mornings are cooler, and that can only mean one thing: cyclocross season is here. With Trophy Cup and Harvest Cross kicking off in Portland this week, we asked around the shop for everyone's favorite choice of rubber for when you're going tape to tape. We split them into two camps:
For the CX Purists (33mm max):
Stay UCI-legal and fast, even if it feels a little wild running 33mm knobbies when road tires are blowing past that width.
The benchmark all-rounder. From dry grass to slick mud, the Grifo’s classic chevron tread delivers predictable grip and fast rolling. If you want one tire to handle it all, this is the safe (and smart) bet.
When conditions get sloppy, the Rhino shines. Its aggressive knobs bite deep in mud and wet grass, giving you confidence when courses turn ugly. A must-have for those true Portland downpours.
A versatile tread that balances speed with bite. The Terra Pro rolls quickly on hardpack but has enough knob height to dig in when corners get sketchy. Lightweight, supple, and race-ready and doesn't break the bank.
For everyone else (> 33mm):
Why wider? More volume means lower pressures, better traction in loose corners, and a bigger contact patch for confidence. Plus, more comfort when you’re rattling around the course.
